The Prevailing Wins dragon boat team is open to new participants.

With the dragon boat season about to begin, Comox Valley’s Prevailing Wins dragon boat team is inviting people to try out the popular watersport.

The Prevailing Wins team is made up of both women and men, and they all value recreation, fitness, camaraderie, and competition.

The team started in 2006 when some members of Comox Valley’s Blazing Paddles formed a mixed adult racing team. Since then, Prevailing Wins has paddled its way to many victories at a variety of Vancouver Island races and festivals over the years, including Race the River at Campbell River, West Coast Dragon Boat Festival at Sproat Lake, VI Paddling’s Dragon Boat Festival at Nanaimo Harbour, and Super Sprints at Fairway Gorge Paddling Club in Victoria.

"We are gearing up for another exciting race season, culminating at VI Paddling’s Comox Dragon Boat Festival on September 13, 2025, at the Comox Harbour," a press release from the team says.

Those interested in trying the sport can meet at the boat ramp at Comox Marina for year-round paddling. Spring and summer practices are Monday and Thursday evenings, going from 6 p.m. until 7 p.m. Winter practices are Saturday mornings from 10 until 11. Paddles and lifejackets are provided.

"Practices are exhilarating workouts that will challenge you to limits you may not think you were capable of," the release says.

The team is coached by Canadian National Team dragon boat champion, Jane Bowering-Hay.
