An overtime win capped the Comox Valley Ice Crushers’ season in dramatic fashion at the Ringette BC Provincial Club Championships in Richmond in March.
The Ice Crushers, who are Comox Valley Ringette’s U14 team, did the Valley proud at the Provincial finals from March 21 – 23.
The team took home the bronze medal, defeating a strong Terrace club in an exciting come-from-behind win that needed extra minutes to settle.
Taking a pass from Claire Barrie, Comox forward George Petty slipped one past the Terrace goaltender just a few minutes into the extra frame. Strong goaltending from Comox netminder Gavin Perry kept Comox alive and able to mount the exciting comeback. Winning against Terrace, which traditionally has a strong team, was no easy task – Terrace had defeated Comox in a closely contested game during round-robin play.
The Ice Crushers went 2-1 during round robin play. The team defeated Burnaby and Chilliwack while losing by one to Terrace. The team fell to a fast Richmond team in semi-final play, though Comox was heavily penalized throughout the game and played short-handed for much of it. The loss to Richmond set up a Comox versus Terrace rematch for the bronze.
The bronze medal win is the highlight of a strong season from the U14 Ice Crushers.
The team proudly represented the Comox Valley Ringette Association and community and is looking forward to another season of CV Ringette next year.Several U16 players from Comox were invited to play with Burnaby and Richmond Ringette teams and compete in Provincials. They played tough, competitive games. Our players said they “had a great time and appreciated the welcoming and positive tournament environment”.
Sholeh Kerrigan, our lone u19 athlete, was picked up by Terrace and they went on to defeat long time rivals, Burnaby, in the bronze medal game.
Terrace coach, Lisa Smith, said "Sholeh played so well this weekend and contributed so much to our success. She was a joy to have on our bench too!”
