The Comox Valley Regional District is looking for people to get involved and join the emergency radio communications team.

Those who are interested can become a radio operator with Comox Valley Emergency Management (CVEM) Service by attending an amateur radio course in April and May.

The five-day course starts on April 27, and runs for five consecutive Sundays: April 27, May 4, 11, 18, and 25. It will be run by current members of the Comox Valley Amateur Radio Club. The course is from 9 until 3:30 each day, and there is a final test on May 25.

“This is a great opportunity to become involved in the community and understand the basics of radio communications and the use of amateur radio”, explains Monique Thomas, Emergency Programs and Partnerships Facilitator. “If you have amateur/ham radio experience or if you are keen to learn and get involved, we would love to hear from you.”

"Knowing what to do during a major disaster may be difficult," a release from the regional district says. "As a CVEM volunteer emergency radio operator, you will develop the necessary skills and knowledge to respond when phone service and electrical power are down."

To register, email or call 250-334-6000 and ask for Comox Valley Emergency Management. For more information on emergency management training, visit .
