A Comox Valley ophthalmologist has been nominated as a “Featured Physician” by the Canadian Ophthalmological Society in their March 2025 newsletter.
Dr. Sadhana Kulkarni MD, FRCSC, is a glaucoma specialist in Comox was born in Australia and trained as an ophthalmologist in India. Dr. Kulkarni laid a strong foundation for her career before immigrating to Canada as an international medical graduate.
“I’m truly honored by the recognition, which I see as a reflection of the incredible teamwork and support from my medical colleagues and the broader community here in the Comox Valley,” said Kulkarni. “This recognition motivates me to continue providing the best possible medical care to my patients and contributing to the field of ophthalmology.”
As an IMG, Dr. Kulkarni faced the daunting task of retraining and obtaining licensure for independent practice. With self-conviction, she navigated this challenge through volunteering, sub-speciality fellowships, and eventually, securing two ophthalmology residency positions.
Dr. Kulkarni came to the Comox Valley and initially worked as a locum. The region's beauty and sense of community captured her heart, prompting her to establish roots. Dr. Kulkarni's practice flourished as she introduced modern technology and founded a glaucoma practice to serve the local community.
Beyond her clinical work, Dr. Kulkarni is deeply involved in volunteerism, collaborating with organizations and local church groups across South America, Africa, India, and China. Her volunteer efforts, particularly in cataract camps and teaching sessions with local surgeons, have enriched her global perspective and reinforced her belief that true success comes from aligning one's work with personal values.
