The City of Courtenay have announced transportation upgrades coming to the eastbound and westbound lanes of the 5th Street hill approach to the bridge as well as the intersection at 5th Street and Cliffe Avenue.

Paving will occur overnight to limit disruption to traffic. It will begin on Sept. 26 to Sept. 27, between 10 p.m. and 7 a.m., weather dependent.

During construction hours, the area from the 5th Street Bridge, 5th Street bridge to Cliffe Avenue and the intersection of 5th Street and Cliffe Avenue will be closed to traffic. Detours will be Comox Road, Ryan Road, 17th Street Bridge or Condensory Bridge. Pedestrians and cyclists will still have access to the sidewalks though the City encourages going through the Native Sons/Florence Filberg Centre parking lot.

Traffic control personnel will be on site to assist pedestrians, and cyclists through the work zone.

The repaving is part of the City’s Pedestrian, Cycling and Pavement Renewal program. The project will improve the strength of the driving surface by adding aramid fibers (a fiber containing enhanced structural properties and strength) to the new asphalt, addressing the rutting from the aging asphalt.
