The Remnants board artwork born from salvaged Lorne Hotel materials, was created by Terrie Anderson for Ben-Zion Eni who had Portside Produce at the original Lorne Hotel site in the spring and summer of 2021.

The art is from foundation boards, lattice and other remnants. After Eni decided not to lease the Lorne Hotel site again, Anderson changed the artwork to reflect the Lorne Hotel and gifted it to Jennifer Warnyca, Emily Fairbairn’s granddaughter.

Fairbairn was an active member of the community of Comox in her lifetime, once known as the Lady of Comox. She was a charter member of the Comox Golf Club when it opened in 1928, and organized the boys who would become caddies. She donated the Ladies Fairbairn trophy for golf which continues to be awarded each year.

Fairbairn was a founding member of the Comox Presbyterian Church Ladies Guild after the church opened 1922.

From 1921 to 1959, Fairbairn ran the Lorne Hotel. In 2011, the Lorne Hotel was destroyed by fire.

“We loved that it became such a beloved part of the community at the heart of the town and were shattered when it burnt down,” said Warnyca.

Warnyca remembers visiting her granny (Fairbairn) every summer in Comox, playing in the attic of the Lorne Hotel and spending time in the little red cabin that Fairbairn had built at Little River in the 1940s.

Anderson became friends with Warnyca in 2023 and soon realized how significant Fairbairn and the Lorne Hotel were to Comox. Anderson repurposed the original artwork she had completed for Eni’s produce stand and focused it on the Lorne Hotel. She then dedicated the art to Fairbairn.

In May of this year, Warnyca donated the artwork to the Town of Comox. The art piece now adorns the Comox town hall.

“Emily did so much for the community, it is wonderful that the Town of Comox has supported this tribute,” said Warnyca.
