The Equal Access Committee is pleased to announce that it will be hosting a public forum to discuss the future of seniors residential and hospice care in the Comox Valley.
The meeting is Wednesday, June 21 at 7 p.m. at the Comox Community Centre at 1855 Noel Ave. The committee is a citizens group committed to ensuring that residents of the Comox Valley have the best possible residential and hospice care when needed, as well as full access to all of their legal rights, specifically MAiD, without faith–based restriction or transfer because of the faith–based beliefs of the institution providing that care – the same access to care available everywhere else on Vancouver Island.
We believe that our community would be best served if representatives from all of the decision-makers and care providers would come together to share information about their plans and positions, and to answer questions from the community in a thoughtful and respectful setting.
To this end invitations have been sent to Island Health, Providence Health Care, St. Joseph’s, Glacier View Lodge and the Comox Valley Hospice Society. The latter has agreed to send a representative.
Also agreeing to attend are Dr. Tanja Daws and Lisa Saffarek, RN, who will share her personal experience.
The timing of this meeting is critical, and we felt it necessary to proceed at this time regardless because Island Health has agreed to allow the Equal Access Committee to make a presentation to its board of directors in Victoria on June 22.
It is our goal to let Island Health know how the people of the Comox Valley feel about this issue.
To facilitate the discussion on June 21, we would encourage the submission of questions by June 19, emailed to equalaccesscommittee@shaw.ca.
In addition, questions from the floor will be welcomed as long as time permits.
