In a ceremony held in September, Cumberland resident Meaghan Cursons received the King Charles III Coronation Medal.
The medal, presented by MLA Josie Osbourne, recognizes Cursons’ significant contributions to the Village of Cumberland and the wider Comox Valley. Osborne, whose provincial Mid Island-Pacific Rim riding includes Cumberland, said “there is no one more deserving than Meaghan for this recognition. Her incredible leadership and activism has inspired and motivated youth and adults alike to get engaged and make Cumberland a better place to live. We are so lucky to have Meaghan championing our community and this incredible place we call home.”
Cursons is a high-energy non-profit and community leader who has been active in the Comox Valley for 30 years. Her community-building efforts have spanned land conservation and watershed protection, and the arts, heritage, youth, and economic development sectors. In addition to being the Executive Director of the Cumberland Community Forest Society since 2013, she also serves as Chair of the Cumberland Heritage Commission, a director with Island ̨MM Economic Trust, and Vice Chair of the Comox Valley Art Gallery. Meaghan is a well-known producer of community events ranging from Elevate the Arts and Cumberland’s Fungus Fest, to Courtenay’s Moonlight & Magic.
“Meaghan is truly a gift to our community. Her enthusiasm for bringing people together and driving community development is remarkable. Her hard work, dedication and volunteerism has built a legacy of fantastic events and a culture of getting involved that will benefit our community well into the future. We are so grateful to have her and her unwavering energy here in the Village!,” said Cumberland Mayor Vickey Brown.
“Meaghan is an inexhaustible fountain of ideas, energy, art and enthusiasm. She has a unique ability to bring people together from different communities, professions and walks of life, and both inspire and organize them to collaborate to build and improve our wonderful community,” stated Shawn Gabel, board chair of the Cumberland Community Forest Society.
The King Charles II Coronation Medals were awarded to 30,000 Canadians who have significantly contributed to Canada or a particular community within Canada.
