The Fanny Bay hall and its property were set to be put up for sale in November 2023.

When the Fanny Bay Senior Society (FBSS) heard the news they were shocked as the hall and land had been donated to the community in the 1950s.

“The land and buildings were all donated by local families and businesses, and we have paid rent and maintained the property for almost 50 years. Our little hall is an important fixture in the community and we had to find a way to save it,” said Joan Johnsen, FBSS president.

FBSS members came together to think of options for saving the hall which included renegotiating the lease or having the Diocese retain the land. Both options were turned down.

Instead, the FBSS approached the Comox Valley Regional District with the idea of a purchase and lease arrangement where the hall would remain in the hands of the FBSS. To help secure this idea, a GoFundMe was started and raised $47,000. Donors included FBSS members, Baynes Sound Lions Club and other local community members and businesses.

These combined efforts worked to save the Fanny Bay Hall.

“I would like to give a huge thank you to the Comox Valley Regional District and to our local residents and businesses for stepping up to make our dream a reality,” said Johnsen.
