Curling beer kegs for a good cause at the Comox Valley Curling Centre

All proceeds will go to the Cat Advocates Teaching and Saving Society

The Comox Valley Curling Centre (CVCC) is thrilled to announce the 4th annual Battle of The Breweries Keg Curling Fundraiser.

Hosted at the curling centre, this spectator-friendly event, encouraging fan participation, will take place on Saturday, March 23, at 7:30 p.m.

CVCC manager Keith Parry said the organization has been the first worldwide to pioneer this unique tradition.

“(The event) started four years ago or the year before COVID, when the curling center had eight taps of craft beers (and kegs were being) changed on a daily basis,” said Parry. “We store all of the kegs on the side of the curling ice and that’s when we got the idea. We wondered how those would move down a sheet of curling ice.”

It turns out that these big metallic cylinders fare pretty well and do not damage the ice.

Following the same rules as curling, Parry explained that the objective of this event is to bring together brewers and their employees, allowing them to connect and take a break from their hectic day-to-day schedules.

At this year’s competition, the participating eight Island craft breweries that will be battling it out on the ice are Ace Brewing, Beach Fire, Cumberland Brewing, Gladstone, Hoyne, Land & Sea, Mount Arrowsmith, & Rad Brewing.

The winner will receive a $500 advertising prize from Jet FM and the opportunity to sip from the grand prize trophy the kegoblet.

However, Parry made it clear that this event is open to everyone to join in and experience this wacky tradition while enjoying music, beer, and a lively atmosphere.

The organizer explained that spectators will have the opportunity to try their hand at shooting a beer keg during intermission. With a small $5 donation, participants have the chance to win prizes by getting their keg closest to the central curling ring.

All proceeds from this event will support the Cat Advocates Teaching and Saving Society in their mission to rescue, care for, and find safe new homes for cats in need.

“This (charity) is an incredibly small grassroots organization,” said Parry. “Their foster-a-cat program is unique in that they really take it seriously trying to find an appropriate home for cats in severe distress.”

The Comox Valley Curling Centre will donate 50 cents from every beer sold during the weekend. Additionally, Victoria’s Hoyne Brewing has pledged to contribute 50 cents from every Hoyne beer sold at the CVCC throughout March.

Cumberland’s Lucky Village Karaoke will be the upstairs entertainment in the newly renovated banquet room, followed by dancing.

The event is open to all, and admission is by donation.
