The Village of Cumberland approved additional funding of nearly $87,946 plus an extra sum of $15,000 at the April 8 council meeting.

As requested by engineering technologist Joel Clarkston, this money will go towards the optional contract work on First Street.

The project is part of the 2023 Roads and Utilities Capital Works and . Council awarded the contract to Knappett Industries for $2 million.

“When the capital works project was tendered in September 2023, we knew that our original budget estimates did not have enough to completely rebuild First Street,” Clarkston noted at the council meeting. “Optional work with your approval (would build a) design very similar to what currently exists on Third Street.”

This construction project is set to build new pavement, wider sidewalks, improved wheelchair letdowns at crosswalk locations and additional delineated parking stalls.

Clarkston added that the new sidewalk will increase planting areas to increase green space in the community.

Councillor Troy Therrien put forward the motion that was adopted unanimously.

The council stated that the additional money will be sourced from the local government Climate Action Plan funds.
