The Kumugwe Dance Group is hosting the He Waka Kōtuia, a Māori group hailing from the Ōtākou territory of New Zealand on National Aboriginal Day.

National Aboriginal Day is about celebration, education and sharing.

In keeping with that spirit and to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Kumugwe Cultural Society, this year the Kumugwe Dance Group is offering the Comox Valley community a rare opportunity.

On Wednesday June 21, He Waka Kōtuia, a Māori group hailing from the Ōtākou territory of New Zealand, will be joining the Kumugwe Dance Group for a performance in the K’omoks Bighouse.

He Waka Kōtuia is a Māori cultural group of families dedicated to developing kapa haka (Māori performing arts), Māori culture and language revitalization for Māori youth and families since 2005.

The Kumugwe Dance Group is a Kwakwaka’wakw and K’omoks dance group focused on learning, sharing and educating the greater community about our ancient Indigenous culture. It is a rare honour and privilege to host He Waka Kōtuia in the Comox Valley and we are excited to share an evening of rich cultural diversity with the community.

Join the Kumugwe Dance Group and He Waka Kōtuia the K’omoks Bighouse. Doors open at 6 p.m. and the event will start at 7 p.m. Admission is by donation with all proceeds going to He Waka Kōtuia.
