Comox’s Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue (RCM-SAR) will be helping out at Nautical days by participating in the parade, ensuring safety on the water during the Build, Bail and Sail, and fireworks later in the evening.
RCM-SAR operates more than 30 marine rescue stations including Station 60 out of Comox. They have two SAR vessels that the volunteers use. Volunteers spend more than 200 hours a year responding to many different types of rescue situations, being on standby 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
One of RCM-SAR’s advanced crew members, Chris Beech, just completed mission number 50.
“Volunteering with RCM-SAR Station 60 is a great way to give back to our community. While there is a significant commitment, there is certainly a greater payback in the relationships developed amongst our crew and the shared joy of being on the water,” said Beech. “We are proud to be onboard the boats you see heading out when all others are heading in.”
As part of its goals, RCM-SAR aims to save 100 per cent of lives at risk, reduce the number and severity of search and rescue events, promote marine safety and support the Canadian Coast Guard.
The RCM-SAR booth will be set up at Nautical Days on Aug 5 in Comox.
