At only 16, Sadie Williams has been invited to the Women’s U18 West Camp for Team Canada Rugby starting on Aug. 14 at Shawnigan Lake.

The news came right after Williams and her team won the Western Canadian Rugby Championships in Calgary earlier this month.

Proudly representing B.C. on the national stage, the G.P. Vanier student said she was shocked to find out about the invitation.

“It was very hectic because we had just had our flights changed last minute… so we had to like run through the Calgary airport,” said Williams. “To be honest, I was in shock for a little bit, I didn’t really know how to react.”

The former competitive swimmer turned rugby player started playing rugby at 14. Versatile, Williams assumed nearly all the positions on the pitch over the last years. However, the young athlete admits that she prefers playing lock.

The 5’10’’ forward is now eagerly awaiting to attend the camp and gain valuable insights and sharpen her skills.

“I think it’s just a really cool opportunity because we have so many resources available at this camp,” said Williams. “There will be a bunch of coaches, special guests, and other players with different experiences. It’s just about learning, getting to know other amazing players, and making connections.”

Hoping not only to grow from this once-in-a-lifetime experience, Williams sees the potential for this camp to open doors for her in the future.

Aspiring to attend an Ivy League school, Williams believes that beyond maintaining a strong academic track record, her involvement in rugby could provide her with a distinctive edge that sets her apart.

“Ideally, I would love to go to Brown University in Rhode Island and take engineering next year and play,” said Williams. “I want to try and use this camp to my advantage, not only to continue to do something I love, but I will also benefit by getting an amazing education.”
