This year’s focus of the national Fire Prevention Week (Oct. 6 to 12) is a focus on smoke alarms and the importance of having a functional one in the home to prevent fire related fatalities.
During the week, Comox Fire Rescue will host a series of events to increase your personal preparedness, including an open house at the end of the week at the fire hall (1870 Noel Avenue) on Oct. 13 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.. Firefighters will be available to answer questions, provide feedback on fire escape routes and they will also be out in the community checking smoke alarms.
“A working smoke alarm can be the difference between life and death in the event of a fire. It gives you and your family extra time to escape safely” said Fire Chief, Gord Schreiner. “Regularly testing and maintaining your alarm is one of the simplest yet most effective ways to protect your home and loved ones.”
Some smoke alarm tips from the Comox Fire Rescue include installing smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside each sleeping area and on each level of the home. Test smoke alarms once a month by using the test button. Replace all smoke alarms when they are 10 years old or they stop responding to the testing button.
