With summer just around the corner, ‘tis the season for going tropical on our very own Island.

With summer just around the corner, ‘tis the season for going tropical on our very own Island.

Party With A Purpose, a fundraiser sponsored by the Vancouver Island Parrot Heads, is the perfect opportunity to kick-off summer fun, complete with flowered shirts and skirts, frozen drinks, and good music.

This year’s party is on May 19, and is a fundraiser for the Comox Valley Head Injury Society.

Starting at 7 p.m. at the Griffin Pub in Comox, the Ryder Hawkins Band will entertain all evening. Funds will be earned through a silent auction and 50/50. The Griffin is offering food and drink specials, and there will be lots of door prizes.

A shuttle van will be available for a $5 donation.

The Comox Valley is the official “headquarters” of the Vancouver Island Parrot Heads Club (fans of Jimmy Buffet music).

While many may assume that Parrot Heads are a “party group,” according to the website and one of the founding members of the local club, Rob (Norton) McBride, “The purpose of the organization is to promote the international network of Parrot Head Clubs as a humanitarian group sharing information and social activities for mutual benefit.”

Information about the club and information to join ($10/person/year) will be available at the event and on the association website: VancouverIslandParrotHeads.ca.

According to the official website, “This madness started with one club in Atlanta and has blossomed to a network of over 200 clubs around the U.S. plus international clubs based in Canada, Europe, the Caribbean and Australia.” The clubs, in 2014, donated more than $3.3 million to charity and logged more than 372,000 volunteer hours.
