Brendon Johnson returns to Cumberland for another performance on the village’s historic Hunter organ.

He will play at the Cumberland United Church (Penrith at First) at 7 p.m on the Aug.8, recognizing 150 years of Confederation with pieces by Canadian composers and selections from the Livre d’orgue de Montréal.

A Courtenay resident since 1994, Johnson has spent several years teaching English at Bob Jones University, Greenville, South Carolina, where he studies organ with Ed Dunbar. This year he received a music degree, and the Royal Canadian College of Organists has awarded him its Colleague diploma.

Johnson’s early musical training was with Courtenay piano teacher Christine Purvis, who is now president of the RCCO’s Victoria Centre.

Cumberland’s 19th-century tracker-action instrument is the only church pipe organ north of Nanaimo. It came to Cumberland from England via Esquimalt and St George’s in Courtenay and has been at its current home for about 70 years.

Admission to the recital is free, though small donations will be accepted to cover expenses.
