Acclaimed tenor Benjamin Butterfield is joining pianist Sarah Hagen for a concert at Comox United Church in May.
Butterfield and Hagen are bringing their program “The Art of English Song” to the Valley on Tuesday, May 13 at 10:30 a.m. The event includes a lyrical song cycle by John Ireland, folk songs arranged by Benjamin Britten, and a few treats by Flanders and Swann.
Praised by The New York Times as “clarion-voiced and vibrant”, Butterfield has performed throughout North America and Europe as well as in the Middle East and Asia. Recent engagements include the role of the Lamplighter in The Little Prince with Pacific Opera Victoria, Messiaen’s La mort du nombre with Barbara Hannigan, and a tour of Messiah with Calgary’s Early Music Voices.
Career highlights include the Kiddish Requiem at the Kyiv Opera, Perséphone in Naples with film actress Isabella Rossellini, and performances at Carnegie Hall and New York City Opera. Head of Voice for the School of Music at UVic, Butterfield is a fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and received a Ruby Award from Opera Canada in recognition of his contributions as a singer and pedagogue.
A duo known for offering diverse and entertaining programs, Butterfield and Hagen have toured frequently together.
