Come join Cumberland’s annual celebration of harvest and heritage; culture and craft; forest and food.
This year includes the fourth edition of the Comox Valley Arts’ Fall Fair Follies, Cumberland Museum & Archives historic walking tours and presentations, live music and dance performances, a variety of wares and demonstrations, hands-on art, games and activities for the whole family, the highly-anticipated baking events for the Cumberland Community Forest Society, and so much more.
Join in this free family-friendly festival on the evening of Sept. 29, and all day on Sept. 30, in the venues encircling the 1st Street and Dunsmuir intersection.
Led by Kevin Flesher, the always fun, often zany, Fall Fair Follies is a jam-packed local talent extravaganza that pulls hidden gems from all over the valley for an hilarious and entertaining Friday evening to kick off the fair. Admission is by donation, and all ages are welcome (though sometimes the entertainment gets a little racy!)
On Saturday, the grounds of the Cumberland Cultural Centre and the Cumberland Museum & Archives (with their shiny new façade!) and 1st Street come alive with bees, sasquatches, scavenger hunts, apple presses, and loads of hand made goods & treats to peruse and purchase.
Performing on Saturday: Damon Shea, Nathan Senner, The Ryks Davies Band, The Snow Monkeez, Farley Kat ‘N Jilli, and Roadside Rattle, with some special surprises. KellyCat+KayBird Art Studio will offer free hands on art-making throughout the day. There will be Sound Station explorations in EDM, and Lampworkers demonstrating their glass craft. Cathy Stoyko and Arcana Dea Dance return with their colourful and mesmerizing traditional dances from around the world.
There will be the ever-popular walking tours by Dawn Copeman and Meaghan Cursons, a tour for children with Hand-In-Hand Early Years Nature Education Program and an adventure with the Cumberland Forest Fairies, too.
Aspiring bakers should visit cumberlandforest.com for registration and information. Bakers compete for fame and fortune and cool prizes and the whole community gets to taste. This year we are adding a silent auction of cakes and baking!
As an extension of the Local Colours Artsfest, Kymme Patrick and TheatreWorks, in collaboration with Cumberland Museum & Archives, present an original heritage play, on Oct. 14, at the Cumberland United Church.
One Strike, Two Brothers tells a story about Cumberland’s Campbell brothers and their involvement and support of Cumberland coal miners during the strike of 1912-1914. Last year’s play, Coal Town Kids, was a great success and was recognized in the One Act Theatre Festival for Best Original Script, Best Production, Best Ensemble Acting, Best Backstage Co-ordination.
Come on over to Cumberland to celebrate the arrival of fall, the bounty of our community and the nature we all share.
