Good samaritans protected by law in B.C.

The Good Samaritan Act protects a lay person who is providing emergency aid to injured people at an accident scene. However, before you jump in to help at the next collision, remember that unless you have first aid training and know what to do, it is best to do the least necessary to preserve life and prevent worsening of the injury.

No cure for powdery mildew — only prevention and a modicum of control

Powdery mildew is found throughout North America and is easily recognizable by its white to greyish, talcum powder-like circles that appear on leaves, flowers and fruits of various vegetables, fruits, perennials and shrubs.

One of the most charming and comical species of birds has to be the pileated woodpecker. Its unusual name is derived from the Latin word “pileum,” which described a pointed cap worn by the Romans and in fact resembled a crest.

Your cottage and the principal residence exemption

Through the principal residence exemption, your home is just about the only investment you can profit from without paying a cent in taxes. The Income Tax Act allows this exemption on any housing unit that you, your spouse or common law partner or your children lived in during the year – and that can include a unit in a condo or apartment building, or even a cottage, mobile home or houseboat.

Caregiving can be like going back to school

Going back to school isn’t dissimilar to caregiving. Caregivers are constantly faced with new situations and usually have to learn on the go, ranging from navigating the health care system, how to push a wheelchair safely or helping Mom transfer from bed to her commode. We rarely have all the answers and sometimes it means asking others to help us. Some caregivers sign up for workshops and seminars as a way to “school” themselves.
