All will be merry and bright in Comox next weekend, with two days of events scheduled to kick off the holiday season.
The Holiday by the Harbour weekend is a new celebration that brings together the annual Mayor Tree Lighting event and Winter Market in downtown Comox, with the Christmas at the Filberg Light Kick Off. The weekend starts with the Mayor Tree and Market on Nov. 22, and continues with the Filberg event on the following day.
Starting at 3 p.m. on Friday, attendees can visit the 35-plus market vendors on Comox Avenue. Activities like carolling, professional photography, sales from local vendors, a visit from Santa, and popcorn by donation will fill the afternoon and evening. At 5:15, Comox Mayor Nicole Minions will light the tree at Town Circle (Comox Avenue and Port Augusta Street).
"This event is a community favourite that brings magic to the streets and businesses of downtown Comox to help kick off the beginning of the holiday season," says a release from Comox BIA. "The Town of Comox is ready to light up the downtown with the beautiful snowflake lights that line the streets and install the Christmas tree that was constructed by the town team to replace using live trees annually in the Town Circle."
The BIA has hosted the event since 2000, and see it as a way to encourage residents and visitors to experience downtown at this special time of year.
“We have an incredible range of amazing family-owned businesses in downtown Comox,” observed Peter Chambers, Comox BIA President, “From unique retail boutiques and top-notch restaurants, cafes & breweries, to a depth of service providers – Comox is a fantastic place to celebrate at this time of year. On behalf of the BIA Board and our members, we extend our thanks to all those who choose to spend their time in downtown and to the sponsors and partner businesses for their support.”
On Nov. 23, people are invited to bring their families out to the Filberg Heritage Lodge and Park from 3 until 7 p.m. for a night of festive lights and holiday cheer. The light display will be on until 9 p.m., and will run until Dec. 31.
"Get ready for their Christmas Market, entertainment, food, Santa and so more more!" a notice from the Town of Comox says.
