What's better than a bit of magic? Magic mixed with mocktails.
The Comox Valley Hospice Society is combining the thrills of both a live and silent auction with the excitement of magic on Nov. 2. Magician Mysterioso will be performing, and local vendors will be mixing up mocktails to pull the event together.
At 2 p.m., the gavel will sound and the live auction will begin. For 30 minutes, auctioneer Scott Melville will engage the room in a flurry of exciting games and playful bidding wars.
"There are some fantastic packages donated from local businesses and individuals that you won’t want to miss, and it all supports local programs and services provided by CVHS," a release from the organization says.
Tickets for the event are $25 each and accompanied youth under 12 are free. Attendees receive their bidding number and an auction program upon arrival so that they can participate in the live auction, skilfully and dynamically led by Melville. They’ll also receive a ticket to sample one of the delicious mocktails and complimentary popcorn while they enjoy roving entertainment.
Some of the items up for auction are a print/radio advertising package from the ̨MM JetFM ($2,300 value), a Hockey Lovers Package that includes Pacific ̨MM flights, accommodation at the Rosedale on Robson, and upper bowl seating for the March 7 Canucks/Minnesota Wild game ($1,420 value); and a four hour whale and wildlife zodiac tour for two with Campbell River Whale Watching and Adventure Tours ($350 value).
The silent auction will be a bit quieter, but will still be exciting, with high-quality prizes including a professional photography session, original art from local artists, gift cards and more. The silent auction bidding will start at 1 p.m. with a temporary pause for the live auction, and will resume again until 3:30 p.m.
“We’re excited to be hosting this family friendly event and to invite folks to see the lighter side of the important work we do in the community,” says CVHS Executive Director Christine Colbert. “This event is replacing the New Years Eve Stay at Home Gala that we’ve done in the past so we hope that those who have supported the gala will join us in this new fundraising initiative.”
The Comox Valley Hospice Society has been providing emotional support for the dying and grieving in the Comox Valley for over 40 years. Still, 80 per cent of CVHS funding continues to come from individual donations and fundraising. Community support is directly linked to what the organization can offer in a community where the need continues to grow.
The Mocktails and Magic Auction Fundraiser is on November 2 from 1-4 p.m. at D’Esterre Seniors’ Centre in Comox. Visit to buy tickets and preview the auction items.
