Young singers part of chorus

For years audiences have marvelled at the calibre of young talent in the Valley. Be it the symphony, musical theatre or North Island Choral concerts, two most familiar faces are sisters Gemma and Linda Doan — seasoned performers at 16 and 14.

For years audiences have marvelled at the calibre of young talent in the Valley.

Be it the symphony, musical theatre or North Island Choral concerts, two most familiar faces are sisters Gemma and Linda Doan — seasoned performers at 16 and 14.

As a very young child, Bach himself was taught the violin and harpsichord by his father and the organ by his uncle. At the age of eight, he sang for regular services with the St. Georgenkirche Choir as well as in nearby villages. As an adult, he taught his own children both violin and piano.

So should we be surprised when daughter Isabella, 10, accepted her father’s (Dr. Wayne Doan) invitation to come along with him to choir. Wayne has been a member of the North Island Choral Society for 10 years. When asked what she thought of the choir, Isabella replied the music isn’t very easy but the people are nice and she likes the way they treat her, she doesn’t get ignored.

Like her sisters and brother, Isabella also plays the violin and was part of Rainbow Theatre Production’s of The Wizard of Oz.

Isabella is in Grade 4 at Robb Road School.

Paul Colthorpe, musical director for North Island Choral Society for approximately 20 years, is a staunch supporter of young talent in the Comox Valley.

North Island Choral Society has entertained audiences in the Comox Valley since 1983. Their spring concert, Melodious Spring, takes place April 15 and 16 at St. George’s United Church on Fitzgerald at Sixth Street, Courtenay. Both performances are at 7:30 p.m.

Tickets are on sale in Courtenay at Laughing Oyster Book Shop, in Comox at Blue Heron Books and Videos ’n’ More, in Cumberland at Home and Garden Gate, and from any choir member.
