The TD Victoria International JazzFest always fills the city with a certain buzz, and this 41st year, running June 20-29, will be no different.
Ten Hot Days and Nights of the Coolest Music In Town will be a "vibrant celebration of Jazz" and its associated genres, with 55 performances and four workshops held at 11 stages in downtown Victoria and Esquimalt, including two new ones.
The festival's operating budget is $1.3 million, and it is expected to create an economic impact of over $5.5 million on the region.
Previously announced headliners appearing in the “Marquee Series” at the Royal Theatre and McPherson Playhouse are Madeleine Peyroux (James Vickers), Twin Bill: Alex Cuba & Richard Bona Asanté Trio, Eliane Elias (Attila Fias Trio), and ARTEMIS (Kelby MacNayr’s Tiny Rhythm Kings).
The society will continue its program with the Funk & Soul in the Township series at Bullen Park, which will feature three evenings of dance-heavy performances by Twin Bill: Delvon Lamarr Organ Trio & LowDown Brass Band, Sungazer (Ayla Tesler-Mabé), and The Rumble ft. Big Chief Joseph Boudreaux Jr.
During the ticketed evening performances at Hermann's Jazz Club for the six days of the JazzFest Presentation Series, spectators will hear music from Lorraine Desmarais Trio Tribute to Bill Evans, Farah Siraj, Anthony D’Alessandro Quartet featuring Benny Benack III, MusicMusicMusic and Christine Jensen Quartet.
At Wicket Hall in the Strathcona Hotel will be Makaya McCraven, New Jazz Underground, Matteo Mancuso, and Marquis Hill: Composers Collective.
JazzFest is also presenting concerts at two new venues, including Pierre Bensusan's 50th Anniversary: One Guitar – One Voice at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, and Kneebody, Brekky Boy, Shuffle Demons, and Tina Leon at The Coda.
Six free-to-attend performances will take place on June 21 and June 22, beginning at 1 p.m. each day at The Cameron Bandshell at Beacon Hill Park. An additional six free-to-attend performances will take place on June 28 and June 29, beginning at 1 p.m. each day, at Bullen Park in Esquimalt.
Four free-to-attend workshops will take place at The Lounge at Archie Browning Sports Centre in Esquimalt, hosted by touring artists performing at the festival: Grammy-winning bassist Richard Bona, Italian fusion guitar rising star Matteo Mancuso, "renowned trumpet master" Marquis Hill, and Juno-winning saxophone icon Christine Jensen.
