On the heels of the wildly popular The Darkest Powers series comes the first in another supernatural teen trilogy from best-selling Canadian author Kelley Armstrong.

On the heels of the wildly popular The Darkest Powers series comes the first in another supernatural teen trilogy from best-selling Canadian author Kelley Armstrong.

Fans of teen fiction will not want to miss the chance to join Armstrong as she reads from her brand-new novel The Gathering on May 3 at the Courtenay Library.

The Laughing Oyster Bookshop is presenting the acclaimed fantasy writer, who will also answer questions and signing books at the book launch. While a limited number of books will be available at the signing, readers are encouraged to pre-purchase the books at Laughing Oyster and receive a 10-per-cent discount.

Aimed at young adult readers, The Gathering is the first book in the Darkness Rising trilogy and is set in a fictional town on Vancouver Island. Loosely related to the books in the author’s previous trilogy, The Darkest Powers, the author continues to spin stories that are as spellbinding as they are eerie.

The Gathering focuses on 16-year-old Maya, who lives in a small medical-research town on Vancouver Island. She has never really put much thought into who her parents were or how she ended up with her adopted parents in this tiny community — until recently.

Now, strange things are happening in this claustrophobic town, and Maya is determined to get to the bottom of them.

It doesn't help that the new bad boy in town, Rafe, has a dangerous secret and he's interested in one special part of Maya's anatomy: her paw-print birthmark.

A true page-turner, The Gathering will appeal to fans of the supernatural and otherworldly. On her website, Armstrong notes that she has “been telling stories since before I could write. My earliest written efforts were disastrous. If asked for a story about girls and dolls, mine would invariably feature undead girls and evil dolls, much to my teachers’ dismay.”

Today, she continues to tell tales of ghosts and demons, while safely locked away in her “basement writing dungeon” in Ontario.

This is a rare opportunity for readers to meet one of Canada’s best-selling young adult authors May 3 at 7 p.m. at the Courtenay Library on Sixth Street.

To receive a 10-per-cent discount, purchase the book before May 3 at the Laughing Oyster. Books will be available at full price at the event, cash or credit only.
