Sympatico will be appearing at the Little Red Church on Thursday, Oct. 19, as part of the Georgia Straight Jazz Society’s 2023 - 2024 jazz concert series.

During their 10 years together as a band, Sympatico has played to great acclaim at the Nanaimo Jazz Festival, the Georgia Straight Jazz Club, Simms Park, at the River City Stage in Campbell River as regulars at the Filberg Festival and most recently as the opening act of this past summer’s GSJS concert series at Anderton Gardens.

The band is led by Don MacKay on five-string bass and Michael Eddy on keyboards with Rachel Cooper on alto sax, tenor sax, clarinet and percussion, Jay Havelaar on trumpet, flugelhorn and percussion and Tom Tinsley on drums.

These well-known Vancouver Island musicians play an exciting Latin-infused program which recognizes the incredible talent of composers such as Chick Corea, Russel Ferrante and McCoy Tyner among others.

Expect to hear a potpourri of tunes including Armando’s Rhumba, Friends and Windows - a couple of up-swing tunes. Cooper and Havelaar will be demonstrating their uncanny ability to play so well together with some unison performances on several tunes, including a few originals.

Cooper will also be sure to melt hearts with her clarinet versions of Yesterdays and Round Midnight.

Along with Eddy’s excellent accompaniment skills and exciting piano solos, MacKay’s solid accompaniment and the impeccable timing of drummer Tinsley with a bit of percussion from Cooper and Havelaar, Sympatico is ready to delight with an energetic infusion of talent, conceived to be unique and enjoyed by all.

Doors open at 7 p.m. and down beat is 7:30 p.m. at the Little Red Church in Comox. Admission is $20 ($15 for members) and $5 for students. For upcoming events during the 2023-24 season, visit georgiastraightjazz.com.
