Looking for some last-minute holiday season gifts for your jazz fan family and friends?
The Georgia Straight Jazz Society is here to help - their first concert of the 2025 season, The Anderson Jazz Trio - will be a ticketed event so that you can tuck them into a stocking or a gift card.
The Anderson Jazz Trio, a newly formed combo of voice, guitar, and stand-up bass, will bring its swinging sound to the first performance of the GSJS’s 2025 season. Expect to hear swing standards such as “Bye Bye Blackbird,” Latin jazz tunes such as “Blue Bossa,” and Billie Holiday’s haunting ballad “Don’t Explain.” This trio brings an interactive and spontaneous energy to well-loved songs.
Vocalist Mel McCutcheon is rapidly making a name for herself in the North Island music scene. While drawing on influences including Nina Simone and Billie Holiday, Mel adds a bluesy, soulful energy that is all her own.
John Hyde is a respected bassist in the jazz community having retired to Vancouver Island following a career in jazz education and performance, based at Mont Royal University in Calgary. He has recorded and performed around the world. John’s strong sense of swing and lyrical soloing bring excitement to the music.
Guitarist Doug Anderson has teamed with Hyde for many years and counts Peter Bernstein among his many influences. His guitar playing shapes the song, adding melodic lines and harmonic accents.
The Anderson Jazz Trio’s performance is a ticked event; tickets are available for purchase by cash only ($25) at Blue Heron Books (Comox) and House of Colour (Courtenay).
The concert is set for Jan. 12 at 1:30 p.m.at 40 Knots Winery, 2400 Anderton Rd.
