Queer Culture brings full weekend of fun activities to Comox Valley

Third annual event offers music, food, drag and an afternoon float

The third annual Queer Culture Weekend kicks off Friday, Aug. 23 and runs through Sunday, Aug. 25, with a range of activities planned for all three days.

On Friday night, the festivities start at 8 p.m. with the Wayward Distillation House Candyland Cocktail Party, presented by Victor Anasimiv, Dominion Lending. It will feature signature cocktails, cool beats and light fare. The event is 19+, and tickets are $10.

Events get underway on Saturday with the Drag Race at Simms Park starting at noon. This is a free, all-ages event, with competitors vying for prizes, bragging rights and the title of Queer Culture Queen 2019. Match Eatery will be serving up barbecue by donation.

At 2 p.m. is the Fruit Float. Shuttle from Simms Park to the hatchery where participants can bring their floating devices and cruise down the beautiful Puntledge River.

Saturday night means DÉJÀ VU at the Avalanche Bar. Doors open at 9 p.m., with DJ Em Ash providing tunes to midnight. At 10 p.m., there will be a drag show at starring Vancouver’s best drag star Carlotta Gurl. Then from midnight to 2 a.m., Queer Culture presents JPOD, the beat chef (Fractal Forest, Shambala, BASS COAST). Tickets are $25.

Finally, on Sunday morning, the White Party Brunch, brought to you by Cloutier Matthews CPA, takes place at 40 Knots Vineyard starting at 11 a.m., through till 2 p.m. Dress in white and enjoy brunch catered by Tria Fine Catering.

The event features Hot Shayner, The Newlywed Game, Queer Trivia and Croquette, hosted by Carlotta Gurl. Tickets are $60.
