Pinball wizards from the Island and Lower Mainland will congregate and compete in a tournament at Cedar at the end of the month.

The Mid Island Pinball League will host a 48-player Power Play tournament at Black Diamond Collectibles, Video Games and Pinball Arcade at 1694 Cedar Rd. on Saturday, June 24, from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Entry is $25 and there will be trophies and door prizes.

Qualifying will involve five rounds of three four-player games with groups getting reshuffled after every round. Finalists will play in groups and play three four-player games with the bottom two being eliminated from each group before the start of the next round.

“There are qualifying rounds to get to the finals and then the format often becomes a strike style, where four players are playing one machine together and the bottom two scorers get a strike while the top two do not receive strikes…” said organizer Doug Ramsay. “When you get your third strike you’re eliminated and that determines your final ranking.”

In addition to modern games with LCD displays and animation, there will be some interesting machines at the tournament, according to Ramsay.

“We have an old one called River Boat from 1964, and it’s so old you have to manually push the ball into where the plunger is…” he said. “There’s a Foo Fighters machine that was made this year. There’s a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles one, a Godzilla one. There’s some older electro-mechanical ones from the ‘70s that have the bells and chimes and things like that.”

As of press time, there were still spots available to participate. For more information, search for the Mid Island Pinball League on Facebook or visit .
