North Island College’s virtual 2021 Artist Talk series is set to continue, Feb. 16 at 6 p.m., with a speaker who blends artistry with computer science and interactive media.

Justin Love is the third speaker in the series, which is being offered exclusively online for the first time.

“We’re fortunate to have Justin Love join us as a guest speaker, as his knowledge of breadth of experience of the digital medium is particularly apt for the times we’re in,” said Sara Vipond, NIC School of Fine Art department chair. “It should prove to be very intriguing evening.”

Love is a multimedia artist and entrepreneur whose background includes an MSc Interdisciplinary degree with Distinction in computer science and visual art from the University of Victoria.

As an artist, his selected performances and installations include PrayStation, an interactive biometric swarm painting system that harnesses a user’s brainwaves to produce an image on a digital canvass, as well as Grand Theft Bicycle, an art installation that also functions as a video game for the user.

Love is also an entrepreneur and is founder and president of Limbic Media, which specializes in real-time, interactive media control technologies. The company received the Victoria Innovation, Advanced Technology & Entrepreneurship Council (VIATEC) Product of the Year award in 2019 for its Aurora interactive lighting platform.

The Victoria-based artist’s work has been featured across Canada, the U.S., China, Mexico, Turkey and Colombia.

Artist Talk presentations offer insight into each artist’s professional art practice. The talks are one hour in length followed by a short question period. The winter 2021 series will be held online via Zoom, with a range of dates and times chosen to align with NIC Fine Art and Digital Design + Development classes.
