One of Western Canada鈥檚 most exciting young folk bands, The Tequila Mockingbird Orchestra, delivers its brand of acoustic, high-energy, gypsy-ska-roots-grass at the Mex Pub on Friday, Jan. 14.
TMO are preparing for the spring, which will see the release of the quintet鈥檚 third album, after recording this winter while nestled in the snow-covered woods of Winlaw, B.C. The new album will again deliver TMO鈥檚 signature sound and showcase their talent, but also show the culmination of their genuine friendship and years of dedication to their craft.
The Tequila Mockingbird Orchestra really came together during a four-month European tour in 2008, and they鈥檝e since toured across Canada and Pacific Northwest in 2009 and 2010, playing a m茅lange of festivals and shows.
TMO also won the Monday Magazine M Award for Most Promising Local Band in 2010, and launched their first full-length release and culmination of their success to date, The Blanche Album. The record is named after their beloved piano-carrying touring bus, complete with potbelly stove and hardwood floors, that died on the banks of Logan Lake.
Blanche is a beautiful melting pot of sounds, binding Gypsy influences with African rhythms and Americana/traditional roots to produce an undeniably addicting beat.
The Tequila Mockingbird Orchestra has headlined at the Artswells Festival in B.C. and played Toronto鈥檚 Buskers Festival (selling more than 800 CDS in three days).
As their rise continues, catch Ian Griffiths (lead vocals/accordion), Kurt Loewen (vocals/guitar), Patrick McGonigle (violin), Peter Mynett (upright bass), and Paul Wolda (djembe).
TMO performs Jan. 14 at the Mex Pub in Courtenay with local faves The Naked DJ鈥檚 opening. Doors open at 9 p.m.
