Sooner or later we are all touched by cancer, either directly, or we know someone who has been diagnosed.

How is it going to impact our lives, and how does one deal with it? Comox Valley resident Kymme Patrick was facing the loss of her livelihood when she was diagnosed with oral cancer.

Actress, teacher, director and parent, Kymme has been a powerhouse in the theatre community of the Valley for over 25 years and suddenly she was looking at losing it all.

Laughing Matters is a play on words. It is her entertaining and passionately truthful telling of her five-year ‘detour’ as she likes to call it, but it is also a truism: laughing does matter. In this 50-minute production, we follow her journey from diagnosis, through treatment to recovery, from crying to laughter.

Taking on the role of a Chaplinesque woman, Kymme confronts the monster, and in so doing creates an awareness of the increase in oral cancer and its connection to HPV. She is taking the show to perform at the Pacific Dental Conference in March, but before she does she will be presenting a preview at the Stan Hagen Theatre at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, March 1. Tickets ($20) available at the door.
