Last week, jazz enthusiasts at the Avalanche Bar & Grill were wowed by a brilliant guitarist.
This week, they will be blown away by Morgan Childs, a drummer and bandleader residing in Toronto.
Originally from Vancouver, Childs grew up in the Rocky Mountains, in Invermere, B.C.
He has lived in Toronto since 2009, and has performed, recorded and toured worldwide with jazz artists of distinction including Phil Dwyer, PJ Perry, Guido Basso, Robi Botos, Bernie Senensky, Neil Swainson, Kelly Jefferson, Ian Hendrickson-Smith, Laila Biali and Brandi Disterheft, among others.
In 2016, Childs appeared on the Juno-nominated album Words by pianist Amanda Tosoff. He is a two-time winner of the Montreal Jazz Festival Grand Prix du Jazz, with the Amanda Tosoff Quartet and Robi Botos Trio respectively. He appears with Botos on the soundtrack to the Golden Globe-nominated movie Arbitrage.
The Morgan Childs Quartet will explore the format of the trumpet/sax/bass/drums format used to great effect by such luminaries as Ornette Coleman, John Coltrane and Don Cherry, with the great drummers Billy Higgins and Ed Blackwell. Driving, polyrhythmic, melodic and expressive music will be on display as Childs reunites with his long-time associates Ryan Oliver (tenor saxophone) and Pat Boyle (trumpet), and the prodigy multi-instrumentalist John Lee (bass).
Admission to the Thursday, Jan. 17 show is $10 for members, or $12 for non-members.
The show starts at 7:30 p.m.
