On March 12, art lovers in the Comox Valley should keep their eyes open for unexpected treasures.
Art and Found Day is a global movement where artists leave free artwork in public spaces for lucky finders to take home. From park benches to walking trails, bus stops to tree branches, these hidden gems can appear anywhere—just look for packages labeled “Free Art” and take one home.
The event, founded in 2021 by Canadian artist Courtney Senior, has grown into a worldwide celebration of creativity and generosity. It’s an opportunity for artists to share their work beyond gallery walls and for the public to discover original art unexpectedly. Some artists even include their social media handles on the packaging, encouraging finders to post about their discoveries and tag the artist.
Local artists of all styles and skill levels are invited to join in the fun. Participation is simple: create a piece of art, package it up with a “Free Art” label, and place it somewhere in the community on March 12. To officially be part of the event, artists can register at artandfoundday.com
To make things even easier, Pearl Ellis Gallery, in Comox, is once again sponsoring a wrapping station for participating artists. Stop by the gallery at 1729 Comox Ave. to package your artwork with provided wrapping paper, tape, labels, and protective covering for wet weather.
Whether you’re an artist or an art lover, Art and Found Day is all about sharing joy—so keep an eye out, and you might just find your next favourite piece of art!
