Diane Landry, an internationally acclaimed artist, is bringing her distinctive kinetic installations, performances and videos to the Comox Valley.
Landry - who works “like an invisible orchestra conductor directing object machines” - will speak at the opening event for her upcoming exhibition at the Comox Valley Art Gallery June 15, starting at 1 p.m. The event is free, and everyone is welcome to attend.
The exhibition, Matter in Time/Matière Dans Le Temps, will run from June 15 to Sept. 24.
“My artistic practice attempts to lead us to see the things around us differently. The concept of recycling, in both the literal and figurative sense, is of primary importance,” says Landry, who resides in Quebec City. “The banal realities I incorporate into my installations and performances are easily recognizable. What is startling is the new vocation I give to these semi-readymades. These interventions seek to alter our emotional memory of such extremely ordinary things in order to shake up our preconceived ideas.”
Landry seeks to create work that is a meaningful, mesmerizing, and beautiful experience for the viewer. Landry’s exhibition is part of CVAG’s convergent program Before. Now. After/Avant. Maintenant. Après.
The program also includes a unique community art project led by Winnipeg artist Sarah Crawley. Crawley is inviting the public to install 100 pin-hole cameras at locations throughout the community.
She will give a talk about this “slow” photography project at CVAG on Thursday, June 20, at 11 a.m. Distribution of the pinhole cameras to the public is on a first-come, first-serve basis from June 20 to 22.
The cameras must be returned to CVAG six months later, and the timelapse exposures will form part of an artwork to be exhibited in 2025.
