The Pearl Ellis Gallery has a new exhibit starting Oct. 15, running until Nov. 9. The Triple Vision: Three Artists, Mediums, and Visions of the McLoughlin Gardens, features artwork from three artists using different mediums.

In July 2022, three artists participated in a week-long residency at the McLoughlin Gardens, a stunning ocean-side retreat located just north of the Comox Valley. Using glass, fiber art, and photography, they captured their unique interpretations of the forest, ocean, and garden landscapes that define this beautiful location.

Artist Thom Rypien brings his glass art to the exhibit, showcasing stained glass depictions of the three ecological zones at McLoughlin Gardens. Rypien also made smaller stained glass panels and fused glass scenes that highlight the area’s natural diversity. Rypien’s stained glass masterpiece, pictured, artfully captures the distinctive character of the nature-sculpted Douglas Fir that grows on the beach right in front of the McLoughlin Garden’s residence.  Rypien’s use of line and colour highlights one of the most beautiful ocean views in the Comox Valley.

Artist Glenn Gustafson focused his time on free-form woven tapestries illustrating the Gardens’ landscapes. In collaboration with Brenda Kramarchuk, he also created hand-made seaweed paper and nature prints for a series of books inspired by the Gardens.

Photographer Brenda Kramarchuk used her camera to look at the three ecosystems on-site, capturing their beauty. Along with her visual work, she composed poetry reflecting her experience and culminating in a book, McLoughlin Gardens – an Artist Residency, which will be displayed as part of the exhibit.

There is an opening reception on Oct. 19, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., where you can meet the three artists.

The Pearl is located at 1729 Comox Avenue in Comox. Gallery hours are Tuesday to Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.. Admission is free, and everyone is welcome. For more information, visit .
