It’s all about “tradition” at the Filberg Centre Sunday, Dec. 1 at 2 p.m. when the Evergreen Club once again presents the Comox Valley Concert Band in a musical afternoon of traditional favourites.

Music builds and sustains community and at this time of year the Comox Valley is rich with vocal and instrumental concerts. By supporting live music, listeners are continuing the traditions that have shaped our nation and our community.

Traditional folk songs you may be thinking. The band plays ‘em. As Canadian as I’s the By.

Well-tempered tunes engage and entertain our basic instincts and remind us that we are one people united by simple rhythms and melodies.

The theme from Hockey Night in Canada recalls Saturday nights in the front room eating Mom’s home-made baked beans on TV tables.

Music more than anything else connects us with the past and with each other. Certain tunes trigger universal recognition and awaken in us images and memories of times gone by.

When You Wish Upon a Star conjures a childhood of Sunday nights in pajamas with Walt Disney.

Other melodies hold distinct places in our collective memory. Music defines historical periods and has left us big band standards like In the Mood and even though we were yet unborn, the Charleston can still make our knees quiver.

As Tevye from Fiddler on the Roof says, “How do we keep our balance in a topsy turvy world…in one word- Tradition!” and yes, this time-worn musical makes an appearance in Sunday’s concert as well.

The 60-piece wind ensemble under the direction of Denise Marquette looks forward to entertaining you, Sunday, Dec. 1 at 2 p.m. All seats $10. Children under 12 are free. For tickets or more information call the Filberg Centre at 250- 338-1000.
