Comox Valley locals Celtic Cargo Cult are excited to play shows on Saturday March 15 at The Roy’s Towne Pub, Sunday March 16 at The Heritage House Pub and Monday, March 17 at Gladstone Brewing Co.
Celtic Cargo Cult have been staples of the Valley music scene for over 20 years. The trio consists of Chris Manuel (lead guitar), David Hext (bass guitar and vocals), and David Somers (guitar and vocals). The band set list includes interpretations of traditional Irish songs, covers of contemporary Irish/ Scottish songs, as well as original music by Somers.
The Celtic focus originates with Irish born Somers, who has lived in the Valley since 1991, but returns to Ireland regularly to see family and maintain his accent. The unique sound of the band comes from the blending of these Irish roots with the musical backgrounds of his Canadian born band mates. Manuel has strong roots in jazz and cites his influences as ranging from Thelonious Monk to The Monkees. These influences give a distinct sound to the live performances and two albums, which were recorded and produced by Manuel.
Hext is a guitarist and drummer in other parts of his musical life, but anchors the group on bass with Celtic Cargo Cult. His humour, and what he calls, “his bash on, regardless” style, form much of the personality of the band. He describes his musical roots and repertoire as “everything you don’t have to go to school for”, ranging from rock through reggae and traditional and contemporary folk/country. That’s why the setlist often slips in some John Prine, Guy Clark, or Hank Williams.
From pub favourites and heartfelt ballads to Celtic rock, Celtic Cargo Cult are sure to stir your heart and move your feet.
