Vancouver Island-based folk-roots ensemble Awakeneers will once again be hosting a free outdoor Earth Day concert at Miracle Beach Amphitheatre (1720 Miracle Beach Dr, Black Creek) on Saturday, April 20, from 2-4 p.m.
Attended by over 200 people in previous years, a series of Earth Day concerts has become an annual tradition for the Awakeneers, this year including shows in Vancouver, Nanaimo, Willow Point (Campbell River), and Cortes Island. Recent arrivals in Willow Point, this nomadic band of multi-instrumentalist songwriters — many of whom are siblings — segues seamlessly from a foot-stomping fiddle tune to a hip-hop guide to mindfulness. Their music centres around honest vocals sweetened with multi-part harmonies and acoustic instrumentation.
“As with the previous two years, we’re working with B.C. Parks to put on this free, family-friendly event,” says Erica, one of the band members. “We’ll be following it up the next afternoon with a matinée show at Sybil Andrews Cottage in Willow Point. The theme for the series is Peace and Earth Day, and the concert repertoire will feature a variety of original songs on these topics.”
In case of rain, the Miracle Beach concert will be rolled into the next day’s show at Sybil Andrews Cottage at 2 p.m.
