Comox youngster Jonathan MacLean will be needing extra sunscreen this summer - for his head.
The Grade 7 Brooklyn Elementary student said he wanted to do something special as a send-off before graduating to Highland for the 2023-2024 school year, and Friday’s performance left a lasting impression on students, parents and teachers alike.
Brooklyn held a school ‘fun day’ on June 23, and the morning festivities culminated with the entire student body cheering on as MacLean had his head shaved.
He created the event as a fundraiser for multiple sclerosis research.
“I just thought I should do something memorable before I leave Brooklyn Elementary, and my mom has MS, so I thought there would be no better way to do it than to raise some money for MS,” said MacLean.
Students were encouraged to make donations throughout the week. The deal was if MacLean raised $350, he would shave his head.
He may have to shave his head four times. He raised more than $1,400.
His mom, Amy MacLean, was on hand for the head shave and she said she was bursting with pride.
“It’s inspirational, really, and incredibly moving to see how even young kids just (embraced) this,” she said. “It teaches us all what we need to focus on and think about. I am immensely proud of Jonathan.”
