On Giving Tuesday (Dec. 3), the John Howard Society of North Island is hoping people will support their KidStart program.
Giving Tuesday is a day of giving back to the community by supporting the great work being done by local non-profits and community groups.
KidStart is a volunteer-based mentoring program offered in the Comox Valley and Campbell River. The program connects positive adult role models with children and youth ages 6-12 who could benefit from one-to-one time with a caring, volunteer mentor. Mentors and mentees meet weekly to engage in fun, recreational activities that increase self-esteem, help to build confidence, and support young people to connect with our community.
Courtenay-based donors can drop their donations at Trail Bicycles at 1170 Cliffe Avenue. Trail Bicycles will be matching customers donations up to $1,000.
"That means if you donate $5, they will donate $5. If you donate $10, they will donate $10," a release from the John Howard Society says. "That is a potential $2,000 donation to support local children and youth! Trail Bicycles will be matching donations from November 26 until December 10."
COBS Bread in the Driftwood Mall will donate $1 to KidStart for every six-pack of scones (mixed variety) or tarts (pumpkin or butter) purchased on Giving Tuesday, and an additional five per cent of all purchases if customers mention KidStart. They will be collecting donations from November 26 until December 10. Parker’s Appliances at 700 29th Street will also collect donations from November 26 until December 10.
Charitable tax receipts will be available for online donations and cheques, e-transfers, or cash donations (minimum $20) made to The John Howard Society of North Island.
KidStart relies entirely on grant funding and the generous donations of people in the community. Donations can be made online at www.jhsni.bc.ca, by e-transfer to John Howard’s Director of Finance, kevin.meier@jhsni.bc.ca, or in person at The John Howard Society of North Island, 575 10th St., Courtenay.
"Thank you for taking the time this Giving Tuesday to consider joining in and giving back!"
