Local music maker and author Corwin Fox is trying something new.

“I’m not used to working with difficult clients,” Fox says with a sly smile, “but we’re making it work.”

He is referring to his parents, his collaborators for a podcast called The PaCast.

When Corwin’s father, Paul Fox, was given a terminal diagnosis, he discovered a long-forgotten box of cassettes in some memorabilia he was sorting. Those tapes contained interviews Paul had conducted in the 1980s with his parents and relatives discussing their childhood memories and family stories going back several generations. When Corwin suggested they make a podcast with snippets of these recordings, Paul got right to work on the first script and The PaCast was born.

The fourth episode of this genealogical project is called Brothers At War, and it premieres on Remembrance Day. It is a dramatic recounting of the wartime activities of the fathers of the two narrators, Corwin’s mother, Jane Fox, and Jane’s cousin Scott Murray. The episode explores the relationship between the two brothers and the deep bond that was formed through their experiences serving in the Second World War. Jane’s uncle, Ralph, was a tailgunner in a Lancaster bomber that was shot down over occupied Belgium, and his harrowing story of survival and reunion with his brother is nestled into an evocative soundtrack composed and performed by Corwin. The podcast is a satisfying listening experience for anyone interested in Canadian or military history, or even just a compelling human interest story.

All episodes of The PaCast are available for free at www.corwinfoxmusic.com/podcasts and Brothers At War will be available on Nov. 11.

This project acknowledges and gives thanks to Comox Valley Arts for their support through the Incubator Microgrant Program.
