Sierra Club Comox Valley hosts Saturday benefit

SIERRA CLUB Comox Valley co-chair Mike Bell and the “dancing ducks” bring awareness to a gas station they feel is being built too close to the Courtenay River estuary.

What do 5Play, Defying Gravity, Bucket Ball Catch, Junk in a Trunk, and Rattle It have in common?

The first is a group of entertaining musicians — the rest are games of skill you can play for a chance to win prizes at the benefit being held for Sierra Club Comox Valley.

Taking place April 9, the fun-focused festivities also include a silent auction of art, gift baskets, books, and getaway trips, plus an abundance of sweet and savoury finger foods and drink. It all happens at the K’ómoks Band Hall at 3320 Comox Rd. from 7 to 10 p.m. Admission is $15.

Silent auction items include (list incomplete): a basket of all-natural personal care products from Healing Bliss; the out-of-print book Moose; framed prints from First Nations artist Tom Hunt; handcrafted jewelry from Spiral Glassworks; gift certificates from such businesses as Atlas Café, Laughing Oyster Book Shop, and Innisfree Farm and accommodations at the Ritz Renfrew.

From 7 to 8:15 p.m., come play games of skill — whoever wins the most games will get prizes. Then enjoy the sounds of Courtenay musicians Granville Airton, Steve and Viv Ruskin, Scott Lyle and Lainie Laughlin who perform as 5Play, a fun-loving band with an eclectic repertoire.

As a local group of the B.C. Chapter of Sierra Club Canada, Sierra Club Comox Valley’s mission is to help protect, preserve and restore the Comox Valley bio-region, its ecosystems, species and habitats. Gathered initially to oppose a proposal for a gas station in a high-risk earthquake area, the core group expanded its vision to address the sustainability of the entire Courtenay River watershed.

Currently, Sierra Comox Valley is focusing on two key campaigns: No Gas on the Dyke at www.sierraclub.bc.ca/local-groups/comox-valley/issues-and-campaigns-1 and the Raven Coal Mine campaign at www.sierraclub.bc.ca/local-groups/comox-valley/issues-and-campaigns-1/raven-coal-mine (in partnership with Coal Watch Comox Valley).

Save the date, bring your loonies, and come prepared for a good time, for a good cause. For more information on the event, call 250-871-1540 or e-mail sierraclubcv@gmail.com. Also see tidechange.ca and Facebook.
