Rotary supports feline program

Lynn Hempinski-Baker paid a visit to the regular weekly meeting of the Rotary Club of Cumberland Centennial on Tuesday to make the club aware of the colonies of feral cats that exist in the Comox Valley.

Speaking on behalf of PALS — Prevent A Litter Society — a non-profit organization in the Valley that traps feral and abandoned cats — Hempinski-Baker outlined the need for traps and cages to deal with the problems caused by the animals.

The society traps the cats, which are then neutered or spayed by generous veterinarians at several Valley clinics. Following their surgery, the cats are rehabilitated and released.

The Humane Society of the United States estimates that a pair of healthy adult cats and their offspring can produce 400,000 cats in seven years if none of them dies.

The Rotarians gave individual donations to support PALS and club president Alan deJersey presented Hempinski-Baker with a cheque for $200 for the society.
