Philosophers filter out the fake news

This news is not fake. Honest.

This news is not fake. Honest.

Do facts matter anymore? What is a person to think when evidence is described as alternative facts? How can it be okay when documented revelations of errors or even outright lies are dismissed as baseless attacks by a corrupt and bias media? Is it possible that when 97 per cent of experts agree on something that it remains just a theory?

How can you tell if news is fake? Who can you trust?

Mike Davies is a journalist with the Campbell River Mirror and will touch on some of these topics and more in an upcoming Philosophers Café held at Berwick Comox Valley, in the Community Room.

As a recent journalism school graduate, Davies has seen first hand the differences between what was taught in school as traditionally accepted models of journalism and what fills people’s Facebook feed these days and spent a good deal of time thinking about why those differences exist – and more importantly, what they mean for society in general and the way we receive information.

Join us next Wednesday (June 7) from 7 to 8 p.m. at Berwick as he helps us unwind this notion of fake news. Perhaps we’ll figure out how to consume news that we can trust.

This is the latest in a free speaker series held once per month where a speaker will introduce a theme to the Café and then all who attend can join in respectful, non-partisan conversation – or just sit back and listen. At this session, Davies will have just 10 minutes to introduce the topic, and then the floor is open for 50 minutes of moderated discussion.

The next Philosophers’ Cafe goes Wednesday, June 7 at Berwick Comox Valley, community room (1700 Comox Ave., Comox), from 7-8 p.m. There is no charge to attend.
