New trash collection system kicks off Jan. 2 in Comox and Courtenay

The new year means a new waste disposal collection for Courtenay and Comox residents.

Beginning the first week in January residents must begin using the new automated curbside collection carts.

There are a few rules all residents should familiarize themselves with to ensure smooth operation of the new system.

Residents should now have three carts - one each for garbage, recyclables, and organics (which include yard waste).

Follow the regular pick-up schedule for all three containers. Beginning Jan. 2, the new containers must be used.

Garbage collection will now be picked up bi-weekly, on alternating weeks with recycling. Organics collection will remain a weekly service.

(For service alerts and reminders, use the Comox Curbside or Courtenay Collects app.)

Garbage can be placed loose in the container, or inside a bag. Recycling must be placed loose.

Make sure your cart lids can be closed, with nothing overflowing.

Carts must be placed one metre apart (and minimum three metres clearance), with the arrows pointing toward the street and handles facing the home.

Carts should not be placed where they will obstruct pedestrians or the flow of traffic.

Visit comox.ca/carts or courtenay.ca/carts for more information.
