The Macdonald Wood Park Society will hold its annual general meeting Wednesday, April 17 at 7 p.m. at the Comox Rec Centre, Room B.
The AGM will start with a short business meeting to highlight successes of the past year, as well as electing a board of directors.
The remainder of the meeting will feature Jan Gemmell of the Morrison Creek Streamkeepers as the keynote speaker. Gemmell will give a presentation on the Morrison Creek Headwaters with an array of photos and videos.
Morrison Creek is home to four of the five species of salmon as well as rainbow, cutthroat and steelhead trout. Frogs, freshwater mussels, crayfish and lamprey - notably, the endemic variety of western brook lamprey, the Morrison Creek lamprey - all live in the creek’s cool steady waters. Morrison Creek flows through second growth timber, rural acreages and joins the Puntledge River in the heart of Courtenay at Puntledge Park. The source of Morrison Creek is several springs, which flow from the base of a glacial escarpment and fill a varied complex of wetlands and small streams.
This large green space between Courtenay and Cumberland, known as the Morrison Creek Headwaters, is also home to many furry and feathered beasts. The Comox Valley Land Trust has identified the headwaters as one of the top priorities for conservation in the Comox Valley.
Macdonald Wood was established as a park in April, 1996, the result of a broad community effort to protect this valuable waterfront forest. The main entrance is on Balmoral Avenue at Croteau Road in Comox.
MWPS is the park’s volunteer steward group, involved with the removal of invasive species and new plantings that respect the forest’s natural succession. MWPS also serves as stewards of the Fran Johnson Wildlife Sanctuary, a property that was gifted to MWPS, secured with covenants held by the Comox Valley Land Trust.
Macdonald Wood Park Society’s 23rd AGM is open to everyone. Memberships will be available at the door. Refreshments and goodies will be served.
