Come and experience the Comox Valley鈥檚 generosity at The Golden Silk fundraising dance.
This event will support growing food and developing sustainable fair trade enterprises in Cambodia.
On April 16, following on the heels of the Cambodian New Year, the Golden Silk fundraising dance with David Sommers and the Celtic Cargo Cult happens at the Courtenay Legion at 7:30 p.m.
There will be a brief slide presentation on the Give a Garden Project, a silent auction and a Zumba demo led by Jessica Wittman from Island Pilates and Fitness.
Local restaurants including Tita鈥檚, Ocean Resort, Atlas, Avenue and Locals are donating great snacks for sale. Vancouver Island MusicFest is kicking in a weekend pass for one of our door prizes. Edible Island, World Community and others are donating gift baskets. There are gift certificates from Thrifty Foods, cookbooks, other books, games and crafts at the silent auction.
Tickets are available at Blue Heron Books in Comox or Eco~Centric Natural Fiber Fashion in Courtenay for $20. All proceeds go directly to Cambodia. For more information, call 250-338-4747.
Floating Stone Silks is supporting a Cambodian grassroots initiative to teach Cambodians to grow sustainable small farm gardens.
The trainers use permaculture methods to conserve water and eliminate expensive chemical inputs. Food is grown for the farm family as well as for income generation.
Participants in the project commit to passing on the knowledge, chicks and fish to others in their villages. Each farm actively contributes to the development of many more.
Some of the farm income is donated to selected community leaders to train and support them as social justice advocates for the community. This is critical to protect land from being grabbed and sold to the highest bidder as well as to protect human rights.
The leaders will learn community mapping skills, how to document land ownership along with other advocacy skills.
