The Comox Valley Regional District (CVRD) requires a fireworks permit prior to setting off fireworks for properties within Electoral Areas A, B or C.

Fireworks in the rural areas are only allowed to be set off on property you own or with the owner’s permission. The sale of fireworks in the CVRD will occur from Oct. 24 until Nov. 1, and must be from a commercially zoned retailer operating under the current fire regulations within the region.

If you live within the town of Comox, city of Courtenay or the village of Cumberland, contact your municipality for fireworks regulations and permit requirements.

Permits are required prior to exploding or setting off fireworks (excluding sparklers, Christmas crackers and caps for toy guns). Permits are available online or at the Comox Valley Regional District (CVRD) office at 770 Harmston Avenue for $10. Applicants must be 18 years of age and older and once the permit is approved will be authorized to set off fireworks within the CVRD electoral areas on property owned by the permit holder.

If an applicant wishes to set off fireworks on private property, written consent from the property owner must be provided.

“This Halloween season make sure you get your fireworks permit first,” explains Amanda Yasinski, senior manager of building and bylaw compliance. “Failure to have a permit is now a $500 fine and residents are reminded to plan ahead. As well, please respect your neighbours and let them know beforehand if you are planning on setting off fireworks to help reduce the possibility of frightened children and animals.”
