In June 2023, the Comox Valley Regional District (CVRD) board of directors completed a strategic planning session to help guide the focus for their 2023-2026 term of office.

Strategic planning at the CVRD helps to identify the board of directors’ goals and align the CVRD’s service delivery with those goals. The CVRD’s 10 elected officials identified eight core services that cover planning for sustainable growth in targeted development areas, improving recreation services, growing our agricultural opportunities and protecting the environment, which includes preparing for climate change and emergency preparedness.

As part of the strategic planning session, the board confirmed its strategic drivers to guide service delivery. Those drivers are applied to the CVRD’s core services. During the financial planning process, the board approves work plans ensuring alignment to the strategic drivers.

• Fiscal responsibility: Careful management of services and assets is essential to providing affordable and reliable services to citizens and businesses in the CVRD.

• Climate crisis and environmental stewardship and protection: The CVRD is committed to reducing our impact on the environment and ensuring we can adapt and respond to climate change impacts.

• Community and social well-being: The social fabric of our communities, health and well-being of citizens, and community partnerships is ever present in guiding our service delivery.

• Indigenous relations: We are committed to reconciliation and relationship building with indigenous peoples and specifically K’ómoks First Nation.

• Accessibility, diversity, equity, and inclusion: The CVRD is committed to ensuring all community members have access to services and feel they belong to our regional community.

“New this year is the accessibility, diversity, equity and inclusion strategic driver,” explains CVRD board chair Jesse Ketler. “The board believes this is a very important element we need to make a top priority within the region. We are committed to ensuring all residents have access to services and feel they belong. In addition to our drivers, the Board has prioritized several initiatives related to building sewer infrastructure, supporting our agricultural sector and addressing housing affordability in the Comox Valley. In the coming months, we’re looking forward to working with community service providers and senior levels of government to describe how we can collectively build more non-market rental housing.”
